Albania, North Macedonia & Kosovo: Capitals and UNESCO, An 8-Day Tour

Overnight: Tirana (2nd night) Meals included: Breakfast Entrances included: Skanderbeg Museum, Durrës Roman Amphitheatre After breakfast, the tour heads north to Kruja, the hilltop city synonymous with Albania’s national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg. The guided visit opens at the Dollma Bektashi Teqe a functioning Sufi shrine whose spiritual atmosphere and historical significance are easy to underestimate at first glance before continuing to Kruja Castle and the Skanderbeg Museum inside its walls. Free time follows in the Old Bazaar, where cobblestone alleys and Ottoman-era shopfronts have been trading on this hillside for centuries, with a lunch stop in the city before the afternoon drive west to the coast. The afternoon is spent in Durrës, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the Balkans, on a guided walking tour that covers the Byzantine City Walls, the Byzantine Forum, the Roman Thermal Baths, the Venetian Tower, and the Roman Amphitheatre one of the largest in the Balkans, dating to the 2nd century AD and still partially embedded in the modern urban fabric. The route also passes through the city’s street art district, where large-scale murals have been painted around and among the ancient structures. The group returns to Tirana in the late afternoon.

Overnight: Berat (1 night) Meals included: Breakfast, Agritourism Dinner with beer or wine Entrances included: Berat Castle, Onufri Museum The tour transfers south to Berat, the second of Albania’s two UNESCO World Heritage cities, known as the City of a Thousand Windows for the Ottoman-era houses stacked up the hillside below its Byzantine castle, each façade a repeating grid of large windows that look out over the Osum River. The approach through the olive-covered hills around Berat gives a sense of the landscape before the city itself comes into view. The guided walking tour of the UNESCO old town includes the White Mosque a symbol of the city’s layered religious identity and the Holy Trinity Church, whose Byzantine frescoes are among the finest surviving examples in the country. The tour continues to the Onufri National Iconographic Museum, housed inside the Church of the Dormition of St. Mary within the castle walls. The museum bears the name of Onufri, the 16th-century Albanian master of icon painting, and its 173 objects drawn from churches and monasteries across the country represent one of the most significant collections of Orthodox iconography in the region. From there, the Gorica Bridge an elegant Ottoman stone arch across the Osum leads to views of the distinctive whitewashed houses of the Gorica quarter below the castle. At Berat Castle itself, the afternoon ends with a traditional coffee and raki break inside the ancient walls before the group transfers in the late afternoon to the Alpeta Agritourism and Winery in the hills outside Berat. A tour of the vineyard and winery facilities introduces the methods of local vinification, and dinner is served using seasonal, home-grown produce from the estate, accompanied by Alpeta’s own wines.

Overnight: Ohrid (1 night) Meals included: Breakfast Entrances included: Church of Saint Sophia, Samuel’s Fortress, local guide A scenic transfer east toward the North Macedonian border, with a coffee stop in the lakeside town of Struga on the Albanian shore of Lake Ohrid before crossing into North Macedonia. Passport checks are required at the border. After arriving in Ohrid and checking into the hotel, the afternoon is given to a guided tour of one of the most remarkably preserved and layered cities in the Western Balkans. Ohrid holds dual UNESCO World Heritage status for both its cultural heritage and the extraordinary ecological significance of Lake Ohrid itself, one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe. The guided tour, led by a local Ohrid guide, covers the Church of Saint Sophia, whose 11th-century interior frescoes are among the finest surviving examples of Byzantine art in the region; the National Workshop for handmade paper-making, a craft tradition with centuries of local history; Samuel’s Fortress, the 10th-century citadel whose walls offer sweeping views over the lake and the mountains of Albania visible on the far shore; the Ancient Theatre of Ohrid, a Hellenistic-era structure still used for summer performances; and the Church of Saint John at Kaneo, the 13th-century clifftop church perched directly above the lake that is one of the most photographed landmarks in the entire Western Balkans.

Overnight: Skopje (1 night) Meals included: Breakfast Entrances included: Boat ride & Vrelo Cave, Mother Teresa Memorial House Departing Ohrid, the tour drives northeast toward Skopje with a stop at Matka Canyon, a dramatic gorge carved by the Treska River into the mountains just outside the capital. The canyon is known for its butterfly colonies, its medieval monasteries clinging to the cliff faces, and Vrelo Cave one of the deepest underwater caves in the world, accessible by boat from the canyon landing stage. The boat ride through the gorge and into the cave is included in the tour. After the canyon stop, the group continues into Skopje for check-in and a free afternoon for lunch before the guided city tour. Skopje’s identity is layered with the marks of its history: a medieval old town and Ottoman bazaar on one bank of the Vardar River; and the controversial Skopje 2014 urban renewal project on the other, which lined the city centre with neoclassical statues, fountains, and facades over the preceding decade. The guided tour takes in the Mother Teresa Memorial House opened in 2009 to honour the life of the Skopje-born humanitarian, built on the site of the Catholic church where she was baptized; the old railway station, whose clock is frozen at 5:17 AM, the moment it stopped during the devastating 1963 earthquake that killed over 1,000 people; and the Stone Bridge, a 15th-century Ottoman structure that has connected the old and new parts of the city for more than five and a half centuries.

Overnight: Prishtina (1 night) Meals included: Breakfast Entrances included: Ethnographic Museum A short drive north across the border into Kosovo passport checks required to Prishtina, the youngest capital city in Europe and one of the most energetic. Kosovo declared independence in 2008, and that youth and energy are visible everywhere in the city: in the Newborn Monument, the bold yellow sculpture whose letters have been repainted annually since independence to reflect different themes and messages; in the Cathedral of Saint Mother Teresa, named for Prishtina’s most famous daughter and featuring a clock tower with views over the city; and in the National Library of Kosovo, whose extraordinary 1982 building a grid of 73 white domes covering a structure that resembles no other public building in Europe divides opinion as sharply as it commands attention. The guided tour also takes in the Old Bazaar, one of the few surviving traces of Prishtina’s Ottoman past, and the Ethnographic Museum nearby, whose collection offers a grounded counterpoint to the city’s political monuments. The rest of the evening is at leisure on Sheshi Nena Tereza the city’s main boulevard, named for Mother Teresa where restaurants and cafés line a pedestrian street that is among the most pleasant urban spaces in the Western Balkans.

Overnight: Prizren (1 night) Meals included: Breakfast Entrances included: Adem Jashari Memorial Complex, Albanian League of Prizren The morning begins with a drive to the village of Prekaz, home of Adem Jashari, co-founder of the Kosovo Liberation Army and one of the defining figures of Kosovo’s modern history. The Memorial Complex here marks the site of the Jashari family home, where in March 1998, Serbian security forces carried out a three-day assault that killed Adem Jashari and more than fifty members of his extended family men, women, children, and the elderly leaving only his ten-year-old niece Besarta as the sole survivor. The complex preserves the ruins of the house as they were left, and its impact on visitors whatever their prior knowledge of the conflict is consistently described as profound. From Prekaz, the tour continues south to Prizren, an Ottoman-era town set in a mountain valley bisected by the Bistrica River, and widely considered the most beautiful and best-preserved historic town in Kosovo. The guided walking tour covers the Old Bazaar, the Sinan Pasha Mosque, the Gazi Mehmet Pasha Hammam, and the Albanian League of Prizren Museum marking the site of the 1878 congress that launched the first organised movement for Albanian political autonomy. The rest of the afternoon and evening are at leisure to explore the streets and restaurants of one of the most charming old towns in the region.
